Yes. It's true. Pornography on the internet has become a real problem and will continue to get even bigger if we all don't do something about it. But before we get into the solution, let's look at a brief history of how it all got started. And what the United States government TRIED to do to stop it sometime ago.

In 1996, the Congress of the United States of America foresaw the problem of internet pornography and tried to at least put the reins on it through the Communications Decency Act(CDA). The internet was a relatively new form of media at the time and did not fall under the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) This ACT was an attempt to control what the Congress at that time saw was going to be a problem.

The FCC had already set restrictions on offensive speech which limited it's use to certain times of the day when minors were less likely to be exposed. To do this to a new media (like Cable TV and the internet) required a new law. Enter the Communications Decency Act. The Act imposed so-called "criminal sanctions" on anyone who "...knowingly uses an interactive computer service to send... to anyone under the age of 18...any comment, request, suggestion, proposal, image, or other communication that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards, sexual or excretory activities or organs."

Free speech advocates and civil liberties groups jumped all over it and, in true American fashion, challenged it in court. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, and guess what, they won! These groups argued that the passage of this Act violated the First Amendment "right to free speech" and the High Court agreed. These groups also argued that the Act did not give parents the chance to decide for themselves what was "objectionable" for their own children. This not only opened the door for pornography on the internet, it also opened the door for YOU, the parent, to protect your children from it through the use of "content control filters" or porn blockers.

Since 1996 and this very low key ruling, pornography has become a major problem on the internet. The only way to stop it is to install a porn blocker on your computer. The challenging of the CDA, in effect, put the power of protecting your children back in your hands. Now the question is: What are you going to do with it?
